Competitive weekend heating up in the TIEHL

This weekend, the TIEHL has two inter-divisional showcases. The West Division travels to the Hardee's Ice Plex in St. Louis to faceoff against the MidAm Division. While the Chicago Division heads to Detroit to battle the Detroit teams. Also, the Boston Advantage head to Philadelphia to take on the Jr. Flyers, while the Buffalo Regals host the Pittsburgh Hornets in a two game series.
The Buffalo Regals and Pittsburgh Hornets matchup should be a good one. Both teams are tied for first place in the TIEHL East Division. In addition, both teams could possibly matchup at the USA Hockey Nationals in April. These teams met earlier in the season, with the Hornets winning by a 2-1 score. But that matchup happened over four months ago, and the Regals will be looking for revenge.

Matchup of the Weekend: #4 Colorado Thunderbirds vs. #3 St. Louis Blues
Definitely the game to watch this weekend if you're in St. Louis. This is a rare top 5 matchup, and possibly a matchup we could see at Nationals. Both are the top ranked teams in the TIEHL, and both have commanding leads in their divisions.

Sleeper: Team Illinois
Team Illinois has been playing solid hockey of late. They are 7-2-1 in their last 10 TIEHL games, and sit only two points away from the Chicago division leader Chicago Young Americans.

Who's Hot: Victory Honda
Other than a 5-1 hiccup to #4 Colorado Thunderbirds, Victory Honda dominated teams in their last showcase against the West Division. They took down the LA Jr. Kings and Colorado Rampage by 7-1 scores. Not too shabby of teams they beat 7-1 either. Also, they defeated the LA Selects 6-0.

Who's Not: Ohio Blue Jackets
Last weekend, the Blue Jackets got back onto the winning path with a 4-1 win and 4-4 tie against Gilmour Prep. However, in TIEHL action they've lost their last six games and hope to have more success in league play heading into St. Louis.

NAPHL regular season concluding in Illinois

The NAPHL's regular season will come to an end after this weekend with all teams playing their last five games. The last NAPHL Showcase is taking place at the Darien Sportsplex in Darien, IL. The first puck drops on Friday morning, and the action will continue until the final game ends on Sunday. Right now, the DC Capitals and San Jose Jr. Sharks are tied for first place with 33 points and looking to capture the regular season crown. However, right behind them are the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals and Lansing Capitals, both whom have 30 points. The action should be intense this weekend as teams look to qualify in the top eight for the NAPHL playoffs.

LA Jr. Kings win regular season title

The LA Jr. Kings barely held on to the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) regular season championship, after a 2-2 tie on January 23. The Jr. Kings found themselves in a good position to win the league crown, coming into the weekend with two games against the fifth place Orange County team. But, after a 2-1 loss to Orange County, this opened the door for the California Titans and California Stars to catch the Jr. Kings on the last day of CAHA play. On the last day, the California Titans suffered a 3-2 upset loss to the LA Selects and the Jr. Kings tied Orange County 2-2. The Jr. Kings one point in the tie was just enough to capture the regular season crown. The LA Jr. Kings finished with 20 points in first place, second place went to the California Stars with 19 points, and the California Titans finished in third place with 18 points.
The top four teams from the CAHA regular season earned births in the CAHA State Championships beginning on February 11. The LA Jr. Kings, California Stars, California Titans and San Jose Jr. Sharks earned births into the CAHA State Championships.

Lake Forest Academy Prep at Indiana Jr. Ice two game series was cancelled for this weekend.

Saturday, January 22, 2011

This is a down weekend for the NAPHL, TIEHL and most of Midget U18 AAA hockey. Only a few top 25 teams are in action this weekend. One exciting matchup pins #5 Honeybaked vs. #6 Compuware in a top ten matchup. Also, the Little Caesars North American Showcase Tournament in Grand Forks, MI contains some good teams including #1 Shattuck St. Mary's Prep, #20 Little Caesars, Dallas Alliance Bulldogs, Lansing CC Pride, and Thunder Bay Kings. California Amateur Hockey Association league play finishes up this weekend with LA Jr. Kings looking in good position to capture the championship. And one interesting non league two game series has the Indiana Jr. Ice coming off a 1-4-0 weekend facing Lake Forest Academy Prep.
