Americans hosting round robin tourney

This weekend, Rochester Americans are hosting a round robin tournament. The tournament field consists of two western New York teams and two Pittsburgh teams. Each team plays one game against the three other opponents. The team with the best overall record will claim first place, but this isn’t an official tournament with an actual champion. Rochester Americans is the only team who’s started the 2011-12 season already. Rochester has victories over Cheektowaga AA and West Seneca Wings for a 2-0 record.

NLHL releases 2011-12 schedule

Northern Lakes Hockey League has released their 2011-12 regular season schedule. The NLHL has five league participants: West Michigan Hounds, Marquette Electricians, Soo Indians, Thunder Bay Kings, Shattuck St. Mary's AAA. Shattuck St. Mary's AAA is the defending regular season champion, while Thunder Bay Kings claimed the playoff championship on home ice last year. NLHL lost Ojibwa Eagles during the middle of 2010-11 season, and now lost the defunct Lansing Capital Centre Pride. Lansing Capital Centre Pride always competed for the NLHL regular season and playoff championships each year. The first regular season meeting is on September 24th, as the Soo Indians host the West Michigan Hounds in Sault Ste. Marie. NLHL league playoffs will be hosted by West Michigan Hounds in Kalamazoo, MI, on the weekend of February 24.

San Jose Labor Day Jamboree tournament information released

San Jose Jr. Sharks are hosting their 8th annual Labor Day Jamboree at Sharks Ice beginning on September 2. This is one of two Labor Day tournaments that kick off the 2011-12 tournament season. Labor Day Jamboree usually consists of Pacific district participants, and the tournament allows Pacific district teams to take their first look at district competitors. San Jose Jr. Sharks 18U AAA is hosting the tournament and they're joined by five other Pacific district teams to field the six team tournament. The tournament competitors include NAPHL members San Jose, Orange County, California Titans and Wenatchee Wild. The other two tournament teams are representing Alaska, Alaska All Stars and Alaska Wolves. Orange County is the defending champion at the Labor Day Jamboree, and they hope to continue their early season success at the tournament in San Jose.

Hounds sporting new logo for '11-'12 season

West Michigan Hounds have introduced a new logo for the upcoming 2011-12 season. The new logo includes different colors from the light blue and white to the new colors blue and red. West Michigan Hounds are partnered with the Kalamazoo Jr. Kwings who are new members in the NAHL. Hounds will begin their first season in the North American Prospects Hockey League, and they will continue to be members in the Northern Lakes Hockey League.

Pittsburgh Viper Stars visited Buffalo this past weekend and walked away with two convincing wins over West Seneca Wings. Pittsburgh cruised by West Seneca with a 7-0 win Saturday and another victory Sunday by a 7-3 score. Viper Stars start the season 2-0, a good sign heading into a tough series in Detroit against Compuware and the upcoming NAPHL season. West Seneca hopes to improve off these results, as next scheduled games are against fellow western New York rivals.

2011-12 NAPHL Schedule announced

The North American Prospects Hockey League (PHL) has announced the schedule for the 2011-12 season, including the first event of the season at the ninth annual Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase, which will be held from September 14-18 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota.

The event will feature all 28 NAHL teams, each playing in four cross divisional regular season games. It will also feature the 44 teams from the Tier I North American Prospects Hockey League (PHL), eight teams from the Tier III junior North American 3 Hockey League (3HL) and eight additional teams from the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, who will complete the five-day, 88-team showcase event.

The Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase Tournament has evolved into one of hockey's most prestigious and well-attended events of the entire season. For scouting purposes, the event is a can't-miss for every NCAA program and NHL team as they get their first look at some of the best and brightest hockey talent North America has to offer. Traditionally, the Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase Tournament attracts over 10,000 people in overall attendance, including more than 200 college and professional scouts.

Now in its third season, the PHL is made up of 44 teams (18 Midget Major-18U, 18 Midget Minor-16U, and eight Bantam Major-14U) from 20 programs in 15 states and British Columbia that compete at the Tier I AAA level. The PHL is comprised of five regular-season events leading up to its Championship Tournament Series in which the top teams at each level compete for a league championship. The PHL season concludes with its Top Prospects Tournament, which will be held in conjunction with the NAHL Robertson Cup Championship Tournament in Frisco, Texas in May 2012. Labor Day Faceoff releases schedule & divisions

Tier I Labor Day Faceoff is one of the first tournaments to kick off the Midget AAA hockey season, beginning on September 2nd. Most tournament teams come from the northeastern part of the United States, including teams from states like Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and more.  Tier I Labor Day Faceoff consists of an 19U division for junior teams and majority of the Midget 18U AAA hockey teams. Some of the other 18U AAA hockey teams have been placed in the 18U category which is mixed in with a few other junior and AA teams.

USA U18 selects downs Czechs for fifth place

BRECLAV, Czech Republic - The U.S. Under-18 Select Team scored a pair of power-play goals and added an empty net tally to earn a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic and finish fifth at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Team USA posted a 1-2-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) overall record, losing only once in four outings.

"We played our best defensive game of the tournament this afternoon," said Seth Appert, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. "We're disappointed to win four out of our five games this week, including the exhibition, and not have a shot at first place. But, as a staff, we couldn't be more proud of our players."

The U.S. took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game when Nicholas Schilkey (Smiths Creek, Mich.) scored the lone first-period goal on the power play.

Following a scoreless second period, the Czech Republic knotted the score, 1-1, at 4:32 of the third period. But Alex Galchenyuk (Kalamazoo, Mich.) responded with a power-play goal just over two minutes later to restore Team USA's one-goal edge.

With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Daniel O'Regan (Needham, Mass.) added an empty-net goal to secure the win for Team USA. U.S. goalie Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) made 21 saves in the win, while the Czech Republic's Marek Langhamer stopped 14 shots in a losing effort.

USA U17 select team improves to 2-0 at Five Nations tourney

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. Under-17 Select Team jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Germany and held on for a 4-2 victory in its second game of the 2011 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament.

Gabe Guertler (Plantation, Fla.) logged a goal and an assist in the contest, as Team USA improved to a perfect 2-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) at the tournament.

"The goaltending was outstanding for both teams in tonight's game," said Bob Corkum, head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Select Team. "It was a hard-fought battle that came right down to the wire."

USA improves to 2-0 in Five Nations

Team USA got on the scoreboard first with a power-play goal by Adam Erne (North Branford, Conn.) at 14:49 of the opening period. Three minutes later, Ryan Siroky(Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted another power-play goal to increase the U.S. advantage to 2-0. But Germany cut Team USA's lead in half with its own power-play goal with less than 90 seconds remaining in the frame.

The U.S. regained its two-goal advantage 14 minutes into the second period on a goal byVinni Lettieri (Excelsior, Minn.). Germany made a comeback bid when it scored a power-play goal early in the third, but Guertler's empty-net tally in the game's final minute secured the win for Team USA.

U.S. goalie Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.) made 25 saves in the win, including nine in the third period. Meanwhile, Germany's Hannibal Weitzmann turned aside 43 shots in a losing effort.

The U.S. will next face Slovakia on Friday (Aug. 12), with puck drop slated for 7 p.m. EDT.

Ivan Hlinka moves on to medal round & consolation games

2011 Ivan Hlinka U18 tournament has completed its preliminary round with the top two teams in each group moving onto the semifinals and medal round. The two teams who finished third and fourth place in their respective groups will take part in the fifth place and seventh place games.

Sweden claimed first place in Group A after winning all three preliminary games in regulation. This includes a surprising 5-1 beating on the Canadians in their opening game. The Swedes will take on Finland in a Scandinavian rivalry game for a trip to the gold medal game. Finland was atop Group B until the Russians upset them in their last preliminary game.

Russia finished first place in Group B when they upset the Finish, and leapfrogged them into first position. Russians matchup against Group A runner up Canada in the other semifinal contest. Canada has claimed three straight gold medals at the Ivan Hlinka and they hope to defeat their Russian rivals. Canada started off slow with a 5-1 loss to Sweden, but has been red-hot with dominating wins over the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

USA goes into the fifth place game after finishing a disappointing third place in Group B. USA won two games in extra time, and their failure to capture a regulation win cost them in the standings. USA's opponent is the Czech Republic, the Czechs only victory was by a 3-1 score over Switzerland.

Switzerland and Slovakia will battle for respect in the 7th place game. Slovakia earned one point in their shootout loss to the United States, while Switzerland's closest contest was a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Czech Republic. Slovakia hopes to earn at least one victory on home soil as they've been co-hosts of the Ivan Hlinka tournament for ten straight years.

PIESTANY, SLOVAKIA - Alex Galchenyuk (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Jordan Masters (Rochester, N.Y.) each scored third-period and shootout goals, as the U.S. Under-18 Select Team topped Slovakia, 6-5, in its final preliminary-round game of the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.




Trailing 5-3 with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, Team USA's Galchenyuk and Masters scored 55 seconds apart to force the game into an overtime and, eventually, a shootout, where the duo connected once again.


"I'm extremely proud of our guys for overcoming so much adversity today," said Seth Appert, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. "We stuck together through penalties and after falling behind a couple of times, and came away with a big win."

After falling behind in the first period, 2-0, Team USA stormed back to tie the game with back-to-back goals by Joseph Cox (Chelsea, Mich.) and Louie Nanne (Edina, Minn.). But Slovakia scored once more on the power play with less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame to take a 3-2 lead.


Slovakia extended its lead to 4-2 16 minutes into the second period while on a two-man advantage. But Team USA answered with a power-play tally of its own, as Masters potted his first goal of the game.

The U.S. fell behind by two once again when Slovakia scored 14 minutes into the third period. But Masters' power-play goal at 16:59 and Galchenyuk's tally at 17:54 sent the game into overtime.

After a scoreless extra stanza, the teams went to a shootout. Galchenyuk and Masters found the back of the net on Team USA's first two attempts, while U.S. goalie Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) denied Slovakia twice to give his team the victory.

The U.S. will play in the tournament's fifth place game on Friday (Aug. 12). Team USA battles Czech Republic, but the location of the game will be decided later today.

Russia's upset of Finland leaves USA U18 selects out of medal round

 

USA U18 Select team fails to qualify
for semifinal round

Early this morning from Slovakia, Russia topped Group B leader Finland 3-1 erasing American chances of advancing to the semifinals. Russia now sits 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-L-OTL) through the group stage games and will finish atop Group B with 7 points. Russia's only defeat was in overtime to the Americans by a 5-4 score. With the loss, Finland goes to 2-0-1-0 and ends up with 6 points after winning comftorably against the Americans and Slovakians in their first two games. United States still has to play Slovakia in their final game, but the Americans record of 0-1-1-0 gives them only 2 points. Best case scenario, if United States wins today against the pointless Slovakians, they would end up with 5 points and one point behind Group B runner up Finland.

USA U18 Select team facesoff against co-host Slovakia in its final group game at 11:30 am ET. The Americans have failed to reach the semifinals after Russia upset Finland. Anything other then a regulation loss to Slovakia will advance USA to the 5th place game.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - After scoring three first-period goals, the U.S. Under-17 Select Team held on for a 5-1 victory over the Czech Republic in its opening game of the 2011 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament.
Michael Downing (Canton, Mich.), Adam Erne (North Branford, Conn.), and Gabe Guertler (Plantation, Fla.) each had a goal and an assist for Team USA in the victory.
"We did a lot of good things on the ice to take the early lead," said Bob Corkum, head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Select Team. "The kids came out fired up and our goaltender played great."
The U.S. jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Erne scored just over one minute into the opening period off of an assist by Guertler. Less than two minutes later, Downing made the score 2-0 with a power-play tally. Finally, Guertler scored a goal of his own to give Team USA a three-goal edge after one.


Connor Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) extended Team USA's lead to 4-0 with the game's lone second-period marker. Then, after the Czech Republic notched a power-play tally early in the third period, Ryan Siroky (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) connected with the U.S. on the man advantage midway through the frame to close out the scoring.
U.S. goalie Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.) turned aside 34 shots in the win, while Czech Republic goaltender Pavel Jekel stopped 27 shots in a losing effort.
The U.S. will next face Germany tomorrow (Aug. 10), with puck drop slated for 7 p.m. EDT.

Todd Jones to lead U18 Omaha AAA

The Omaha AAA Hockey Club is proud to announce that Todd Jones has accepted the position as Head Coach of the OAHC's U18 Team. Coach Jones is a Thunder Bay, Ontario native whose coaching credentials include:

• Assistant Coach – University of Nebraska-Omaha (CCHA, 2004-2009);
• Assistant Coach – University of Alaska-Fairbanks (CCHA, 2001-2004);
• Head Coach/GM - Fernie Ghostriders (AWHL, 2000-2001);
• Head Coach/GM - Thunder Bay Flyers (USHL, 1999-2000); and
• Assistant Coach/Assistant GM - Sioux City Musketeers (USHL, 1997-1998).

During his playing career, Coach Jones was the goalie for the:

• University of North Dakota (WCHA, 1991-1994);
• New Westminster Royals (BCJHL, 1989-1991 - Wally Forslund Memorial Trophy winner); and
• Penticton Knights (BCJHL, 1988-1989). 

Coach Jones currently resides in Omaha along with his wife (Ramona) and their son (Xavier).
